And on top of all that…/Our system of learning/If ever you need me

Hey you guys. (smile) Sorry I’ve been away so long. Life has really been handing me it’s fair share of lemons and I’ve been tryin’ to make lemonade with no sugar (LOL) Things have really been rough. Not just with the whole ,”my son has autism” thing, but just life (in general). I think life is hard for a lot of people right now with the economy and joblessness. My house is recuperating and we’re a stronger family than we were before.

Right now, my son is doing great. Don’t get me wrong, there’s lots of room for improvement but as for as talking (we’re working on his conversation skills and story telling/ ability to recall), his vocabulary words at school (he has a test every week and we’ve progressed from a list of 4 words to 7), we’re still having issues with his ability to focus on the task at hand when doing school work but with age that is getting better), and the tricky part or downside of being in class with a “melting pot of disabilities” is the fact that he is imitating the other students murmuring and etc. (I can’t tell you how nerve-racking this is because they make high-pitched squeaks, which sound cool to him but gets on my DAMN nerves LOL), but I can’t do anything at this point but tell him to “act like Desmon, not them…YOU are YOU… be YOU” and hope that he gets it. Math is a challenge but I think once I learn how to tweak it to a way that he can get it, he’ll do better. I bought him a Leapster Explorer for Christmas (great toy for syncing to the computer to add vocabulary words and different levels of knowledge to) and it has been the gift that keeps on giving. He has a Wii (he plays Super Mario on the WEEKENDS ONLY) and we use Netflix (his favorite movies are Thomas the tank engine and Bob the Builder… I know it’s borderline age inappropriate but we’re working on this too) as a reward system.

I bought posters. On one poster is a chart to help with skip counting and counting money. The other poster I have up is a behavior chart with “GOOD CHOICES/BAD CHOICES”. This helps with learning right from wrong, appropriate and inappropriate, and actions/consequences. It’s a work in progress as well. It’s new. *giggle*

This is what’s been going on while I’ve been away from the blog but I’m back and will be writing on a regular.

Remember, if you guys need to talk, I’m on Facebook (Ilicia King) just send me a message sayin’ you know me from here and I’ll add you fast as I can. Also, if you’re local and you need to talk I’m available too. Just let me know if you need me, I’m here. Talk to guys later. *hugs*
